  • Rick Perry Suspending 2016 Presidential Campaign

Photo by Justin Sullivan/Getty Images(WASHINGTON) — Former Texas Governor Rick Perry will suspend his 2016 presidential campaign, the Republican candidate announced Friday.

“For me, the message has always been greater than the man,” Perry said in remarks to the Eagle Forum’s council in St. Louis, Missouri. “The conservative movement has always been about principles, not personalities,” Perry said, adding that “our nominee should embody those principles.”

Speaking about his faith, Perry said that “something things have become clear. That is why today I am suspending my campaign for the presidency of the United States.”

He praised the Republican field of contenders vying for the 2016 nomination, calling it “the best in a generation.”

“I step aside knowing our party is in good hands, and as long as we listen to the grassroots, the cause of conservatism will be too.”

Perry, who launched his campaign on June 4, has been polling in the low single digits throughout his campaign – most recently at one percent in the crucial first-in-the-nation caucus state of Iowa. He was slated to debate for the second time in the lower-tier debate on CNN next week.

In August, reports came out of Perry not have enough funds to pay his campaign staff. Perry’s campaign chairman Sam Clovis quit from the former Texas governor’s campaign in late August and went to work for Trump.

He also ran in 2012, briefly polling at the top of the pack before falling to eventual nominee Mitt Romney.
