A Rexburg man suspected of stealing several cars and car keys from a Rexburg car dealership last week has been arrested.
According to the Post Register, Robert James Mathews, 28, was arrested Wednesday at a home he was renting on Webster Avenue. Police suspect he broke into Smart Cents Auto Sales, stealing all the dealership’s keys and three cars. The cars were found the next morning, but only some of the keys were found scattered around.
Rexburg police said Mathews barricaded himself in the home and refused to come out. Police then negotiated with Mathews and he eventually exited the house and turned himself in.
Upon searching Mathews’ residence, several items linking Mathews to the break in were found, including some of the car keys and clothing similar to that seen in security footage of the break in.
