“Ring of Fire” Eclipse Can Be Seen Sunday

(IDAHO FALLS) – This weekend will feature a rare “ring of fire” solar eclipse. The last time the moon slid across the sun in this way was almost 20 years ago. The moon will block the entire sun except a halo of light but because Idaho is so far north, the ring of fire will appear more like a bite has been taken out of the sun. The eclipse will be visible in eastern Idaho at about 6:15 Sunday evening.

Pocatello Mail Center To Stay Open For Now

Man Charged With Sexual Abuse of a Child

(BONNEVILLE COUNTY) – A man accused of exposing himself to a woman at the Civic Auditorium has now been charged with sexual abuse of a child. George Robert Jones was arrested in April after exposing himself to an woman in the restroom. Police later received a complaint that Jones also exposed himself to a 9-year-old girl at the same time. Jones is in the Bonneville County Jail.

IF Man Convicted of Murder Sentenced

(IDAHO FALLS) – A man convicted of murder in Idaho Falls last year has been sentenced to ten years to life in prison. Geoffrey Salem Elawadly was convicted of second-degree murder in the shooting death of 24-year-old Anthony Camp. Elawadly was on the run for several days before police found him hiding in an Idaho Falls home.

Judge Signs Execution Order For Idaho Death Row Inmate

(BOISE) – A death row inmate who killed a Blackfoot woman has been ordered executed within the next 30 days. A judge signed the death warrant, meaning inmate Richard Albert Leavitt will most likely be executed by lethal injection on June 12. Leavitt was convicted in the 1984 brutal stabbing death of 31-year-old Danette Elg in her Blackfoot home. Leavitt’s execution would be the second in Idaho in the past seven months. Paul Ezra Rhoades was executed Nov. 18.

Man Faces Rape Charges For Relationship With Teenager

Animal Lovers Call For Change in Bannock County

Portneuf Animal Welfare Society President Jo Lynn Anderson told Local News 8 something needs to be done. She says the same people continue to abuse and neglect animals and says there is a “big problem” in the county. Commissioners said they are working to cut down on response time in abuse cases.

Census: Idaho Has Fewer College Graduates

(IDAHO FALLS) – Only 24 percent of Idahoans 25 and older have a degree beyond a high school diploma. New US Census numbers show Idaho is falling behind neighboring states. University of Idaho’s Lee Ostrom tells Local News 8 that more and more employers require a degree and that many jobs are technologically challenging. A Georgetown University study estimates that 60 percent of jobs will require a college degree by 2018.

Otter: GOP May Take Another Look at Closed Primary

(BOISE) – Gov. Butch Otter says he expects Republicans will take another look at the the closed primary election system at the state GOP convention in June. Otter told The Associated Press the question will be whether people were discouraged from going to the polls because they didn’t want their choice of ballot a public record. Otter said his office received complaints from people who were angry about their loss of privacy. Turnout for Tuesday’s election was about 23 percent. But GOP leaders say turnout was higher than in 2008.
