Texting/Driving Bill Now Senate Approved

(BOISE) – A bill that would ban texting while driving was approved by the Idaho Senate Tuesday and is now on its way to the House of Representatives. The bill makes texting while driving an infraction, similar to a speeding ticket. Sen. Jim Hammond said Idaho’s inattentive driving laws don’t do enough to curb texing while driving, which he says killed more than 16,000 people from 2002 to 2007.

Occupy Boise Final Days

(BOISE) – The Occupy Boise encampment is down to its final days after Gov. Otter signed into law a bill that bans camping on state-owned property. The occupiers have camped near the Capitol on the grounds of the old Ada County Courthouse since November. They have until Monday at 5 pm to vacate their camp.

Internet Sales Tax Bill Passed First Hurdle

(BOISE) – A bill that would tax Internet sales for out of state purchases has passed its first hurdle. An Idaho House committee voted Tuesday to introduce the bill and wants to hear from the state’s businesses about the plan. Those who favor the plan want the state to join a national effort to tax Internet sales. Similar bills have failed the last four years.

Newt Gingrich In Idaho

(BOISE) – Another presidential contender has announced a visit to Idaho. Former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich will hold a town hall meeting in Coeur d’Alene Thursday. He will also hold a $1,000 per plate fundraising lunch in nearby Harrison. Ron Paul, Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum each visited the Gem State last week.

Jefferson County Chief Deputy to Run for Sheriff

(RIGBY) – Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office chief deputy Jeff Poole has been placed on administrative leave after filing to run for election against his boss. Poole and Sheriff Blair Olsen have worked together for 26 years but when Poole announced he would run against Olsen in the race for sheriff he was told to resign or be fired. County attorney Robin Dunn tells Local News 8 the county’s policy allows for the termination of employees who run for office against their supervisors.

Boy Charged with Murdering His Father

(POCATELLO) – A 12-year-old boy has been charged with first-degree murder in his father’s death. The Swan Lake boy appeared in court Tuesday cuffed and in chains. Prosecutors indicate the crime was pre-meditated but it has not yet been decided whether the boy will be charged as an adult. Bannock County Sheriff Lorin Nielson tells Local News 8 the two systems are different. 46-year-old Paul Danielson died Friday night from gunshot wounds to the head.

Fort Hall Hotel Looking for Employees

(FORT HALL) – Looking for a job? The Fort Hall Hotel and Event Center might be looking for you. The new hotel will hire 120 people and will hold pre-employment job training seminars today. The sessions will run from 11 am to 2 pm and again from 6 to 9 pm. Larry Murillo tells KPVI the sessions will help those seeking work. The hotel and event center is scheduled to open in June.

Birth Control Bill on Hold for Revision

(BOISE) – Idaho lawmakers voted to place a bill that would counter a federal mandate regarding birth control on hold Monday. A House committee voted to hold the bill so its sponsor could make changes. Republican Rep. Carlos Bilbao will be allowed to make changes to the bill to address legislators’ concerns.

Educators Meet To Discuss Education Reform

Three propositions on November’s ballot are aimed at overturning State Superintendent Tom Luna’s education reform laws. Marilynn Smith tells Local News 8, teachers want a voice in the process. Members of the Idaho Education Association say they will campaign for the ballot measures before November’s election.

Man Barricades Himself in IF Apartment

(IDAHO FALLS) – Eight families were evacuated Monday night when a fugitive barricaded himself inside a nearby apartment. Police say Timothy Murphy had a shotgun when he barricaded himself inside the Idaho Falls apartment with a woman and child. He later let them go unharmed. Police negotiated with Murphy over the phone and he surrendered just after midnight. He was booked into the Bonneville County Jail.
