Citizens Help Pocatello Police Apprehend Drunk Driver

POCATELLO — Citizens in Pocatello helped police apprehend an allegedly drunk driver who fled the scene of an accident and then led officers on a vehicular chase through the city’s west side late Saturday night.

According to the Idaho State Journal, the incident began to unfold around 10:50 p.m. Saturday when police say James Chadwick, 35, of Pocatello, was driving his Subaru Forester on North Main Street. The vehicle left the roadway and smashed a large potted plant in front of Main Street Music in the 400 block of North Main.

A citizen witnessed Chadwick leaving the accident, called 911 and followed Chadwick keeping police updated on his location.

Police were able to catch up to Chadwick thanks to that citizen, however Chadwick reportedly would not pull over. A chase ensued and continued onto several snow-covered west side streets where another citizen who had been listening via a police scanner aided police in the chase.

The entire chase lasted about 10 minutes. Chadwick was eventually shot with a taser by police. A Pocatello Fire Department ambulance crew cleared Chadwick and he was booked into the Bannock County Jail.

Police report this was at least Chadwick’s third drunk driving offense, making the charge a felony.

Chadwick is also facing misdemeanor eluding, resisting arrest and leaving the scene of an accident charges for the incident.
