Photo by Sean Gallup/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- Volkswagen CEO Martin Winterkorn is resigning, he announced Wednesday, amid the scandal that involved misrepresentation of emissions on millions of the automaker's vehicles worldwide.
"I am shocked by the events of the past few days," Winterkorn's statement reads. "Above all, I am stunned that misconduct on such a scale was possible in the Volkswagen Group. Winterkorn took responsibility for the scandal, saying that he "requested the Supervisory Board to agree on terminating my function as CEO."
Winterkorn opted to step down "even though I am not aware of any wrong doing on my part."
The company, Winterkorn said, "needs a fresh start," which the CEO hopes to clear the way for with his resignation.
"The process of clarification and transparency must continue," Winterkorn added. "This is the only way to win back trust."
