Bureau of Land Management enacts Stage 1 fire restrictions ahead of eclipse

SHOSHONE, Idaho — The Bureau of Land Management is implementing Stage 1 Fire Restrictions on lands within south central Idaho effective August 14, 2017.

Officials say the fire restriction is in response to an expected influx of people coming to see the Great American Eclipse on August 21, in addition to a slew of wildfires over the past several weeks.

Stage 1 fire restrictions involved federal, state and private forests, rangelands, roads, and trails. The BLM says the restriction will impact 16 counties, including Blaine, Camas, Cassia, Custer, Elmore, Gooding, Jerome, Lincoln, Minidoka, Owyhee, and Twin Falls counties,   “with the exception of forest service lands in Cassia and Twin Falls counties,” according to a press release.

Campfires and smoking are permitted in very specific circumstances, the BLM says.

“Building, maintaining, attending, or using a fire, campfire or stove fire except within a designated recreation site and in a permanent concrete or metal fire ring, or on private land, and only within an owner-provided structure,” according to the press release.
