There’s a little wireless company that has a great big idea. They’re called Republic Wireless and they offer unlimited data, txt and voice for just $19. No kidding. Boy, if this idea catches on, what will we do?
So here’s how it works. Republic Wireless routes its users to Wi-Fi for the majority of tasks and only accesses the 3G network when it’s necessary, like when you leave a Wi-Fi coverage area. Obviously, that’s going to require a phone capable of receiving Wi-Fi and 3G, and so far the first phone that Republic Wireless is using is the LG Optimus. It’s an Android phone that will cost you $199 without a contract ($99 if you use the special coupon code “welcome19″) and you get a free month of service with the phone. After the initial cost of the phone, it’s seriously just 19 bucks a month.
So who is this plan right for and what’s the catch?
This setup is great for anyone that is around Wi-Fi networks most of the day. If you have Wi-Fi at home and at work, this is definitely an option for you!
The catch. Republic Wireless has the ability to kick you off their network if you use too much data over 3G. They calculate your Cellular Usage Index and determine what your data usage is like compared to other people. If you’re too high on the scale, you’re off the network. But, they do give you lots of notice before you get kicked off and you should be able to get around 550 minutes, 150 txts and 300 MB of data over 3G (with UNLIMITED Wi-Fi usage) without any trouble. Not bad for $19/month.
